NEPHAK and Allies Gear Up for Universal Health Coverage Day
This December 12th, Kenya will be marking its Jamhuri Day to be presided over by the President Uhuru Kenyatta. Coincidentally, 12.12.16 will be the Universal Health Coverage Day. The Universal Health Coverage Day, commemorated each 12 December, is the anniversary of the first unanimous United Nations resolution calling for countries to provide affordable, quality health care to every person, everywhere. Universal health coverage has been included in the new Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations. Universal Health Coverage (UHC) means everyone can access the quality health services they need without financial hardship.
To mark the UHC Day 2016, NEPHAK and allies now plans to build on the promise and commitment to Universal Health Coverage made at the TICAD VI by hosting a high-level Roundtable Discussion to raise awareness about universal health coverage and discuss Kenya’s implementation of UHC. Attendees will be encouraged to write letters to government officials at the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Health to call for more action on UHC-related policies. The panel will feature high-level state and non-state actors working to improve the health and well-being of Kenyans. However, because 12th December 2016 is official holiday in Kenya, this week, the lead organizers of the Round-Table Discussion will be discussing with partners an agreeable date for the event.
